Privacy Policy

TL;DR

WordMeter never sees your text. All counting and analysis runs in your browser. We log anonymous usage of which tool was opened - no text content, no account, no third-party tracking cookies.

This Privacy Policy describes how WordMeter ("we", "us", "the Service") handles information when you use wordmeter.app.

1. What we do not collect

Your text. Word counting, readability, keyword density, syllable counting and every other tool runs entirely in your browser via JavaScript. The text you paste never leaves your device and never reaches our servers.
Accounts. WordMeter has no sign-up. We do not collect your name, email, or password.
Tracking cookies. No Google Analytics, no Facebook pixel, no advertising trackers, no cross-site cookies.

2. What we do collect

Anonymous tool usage. When you first type into a tool (e.g. Word Counter), we record the tool slug, a random session UUID, and a timestamp. There is no link to your identity. Used to see which tools are popular and to size out new ones. Bot traffic is filtered.
Self-hosted page analytics (Trafnova). Page views, referrer, country (derived from IP), and browser family. Hosted on our own infrastructure. No cookies, no fingerprinting, no cross-site tracking. Trafnova's privacy stance.
Server access logs. Standard web-server logs (IP address, user agent, requested URL, response code) kept for up to 30 days for security and abuse mitigation.
Error reports. If something crashes we send a stack trace to our self-hosted error tracker (Sentry / GlitchTip). No request bodies are forwarded.

3. Result-sharing URLs

Some tools let you generate a shareable result URL. If you click "Share", the stats summary is encoded into the URL itself - we do not store it on the server. Anyone with the link can view the encoded result. Do not put confidential text into a shareable URL.

4. Legal bases (GDPR)

For users in the EU/EEA/UK, our legal bases for processing the limited data above are legitimate interest (running and securing the Service, basic product analytics) and, where applicable, consent. Because we do not use tracking cookies we do not display a consent banner.

5. Data sharing

We do not sell or rent any data. The only third parties involved in delivering the Service are:

Hosting - dedicated server in the EU.
DNS - the domain registrar's nameservers.

Both Trafnova analytics and our error tracker run on the same self-hosted infrastructure and are not third parties for data-protection purposes.

6. Retention

Tool usage rows: 12 months, then aggregated.
Trafnova events: 12 months.
Server access logs: 30 days.
Error events: 90 days.

7. Your rights

Because we do not collect personal identifiers, most subject-access requests do not apply (there is no profile to retrieve or delete). If you believe data tied to you is being processed, contact hello@wordmeter.app and we will respond within 30 days.

8. Security

Traffic is served exclusively over HTTPS (TLS 1.2+). Server access is restricted to named administrators via SSH key authentication. Application secrets are not committed to source control.

9. Children

WordMeter is not directed at anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from minors.

10. Changes

We may update this Policy. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be highlighted on the home page for at least 14 days.
