Japanese text doesn't use spaces between words. This tool uses the browser's Intl.Segmenter API with Japanese language settings to identify word boundaries. If your browser doesn't support this API, the tool falls back to counting character runs by script type.
Kanji are Chinese characters used in Japanese writing for content words. Hiragana is a phonetic script used for native Japanese words and grammatical elements. Katakana is used primarily for foreign loanwords, onomatopoeia, and emphasis.
Japanese reading time is estimated at 500 characters per minute, which is the average between typical reading speeds of 400-600 characters per minute for Japanese text.
